Thanking the Lord for His Provision

We would like to share with you that we have reached 100% of our financial support. Praise the Lord!

When we first became members of Wycliffe and were figuring out our budget, we were apprehensive about the whole process. We do not possibly know enough people to meet that budget. However the Lord always provides and in a little under 6 months He has shown us to rely heavily on Him for all things.

We now have definite dates as well to announce. We are moving out of our apartment into Jon's parents place at the end of December. Our flights are booked for January 29th.

Please pray for us as we enter this emotional and exciting time.

Some of our prayer requests include:
- Peace for both us and our families as we prepare to be separated for 3 years.
- That we would stay strong in our walk of faith with the Lord.
- That the girls will adjust to all the changes happening.

And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.

Almost There!

We are experiencing mixed emotions here in the Jagt apartment. I would say home but slowly it is losing its home status! Slowly things are being removed from our home. Some things we are relieved to have found a place for, other things make us a bit sad to get rid of. It brings back memories of when we were setting up house when we first got married!

We received our passports back from Washington with our Visa's stamped in. We are so thankful to God for making this whole process so quick. We were told it could take up to 3 months. Our's took about a month and half! The Lord has confirmed time and again that we are to serve Him in PNG.

Our funding is almost in! 4% more to go. If you have been thinking about partnering with us, let us know so that we can reach 100%. We are eagerly anticipating full support!

Seek the Lord and his strength; seek his presence continually!

Visa's Approved!

We have great news to share.  Our Visa's have been approved by the PNG government!  And they have been approved in record time.  Thank you all for praying for this process to go quickly.  God has surely answered these prayers.  Praise Him!

This means that we are that much closer to scheduling our flights.

We are also getting very close to full funding.  Thank you to all who have partnered with us in this mission.  If you would like to partner and help us with our final push to 100% funding please email or call us.

How Information Technology is Used in Missions

I came across this "scoop" recently.  Jaco Devisser has gathered a number of interesting articles and stories from the missions field to do with the use of IT in missions.

This is obviously very exciting for me to see and explore so I thought it might be interesting for you.  Check it out at http://www.scoop.it/t/it-in-missions

Thank you Jaco for putting this together.

Otew Evangelical Fellowship

I stumbled across this article today.  It illustrates so well the power of the Word of God in the language of the heart.  The Word of God takes on a mission all on it's own and bears fruit.

Let us cherish the Word of God anew.

Otew Evangelical Fellowship: A Church with Heart

Image description
Ruben Bulibol, a leader in the Otew congregation
Tucked in the mountainous Ifugao province of the Philippines, a small church participates in God’s mission and language preservation. Otew Evangelical Fellowship has no full-time staff or pastor, but it does have seventy church members who are dedicated to the Word and to each other.
Bible study is fundamental to the Otew community. Ruben Bulibol, a lay leader in the congregation, explains, “Our vision is to be more rooted in the Word itself.”
“Whatʼs true is not new, and whatʼs new is not true,” he adds, a twinkle in his eye. Ruben, a broad-shouldered man with an easy smile and iron streaks in his black hair, shares aphorisms as readily as he shares his strong belief in sola scriptura. He often invites speakers from other churches to share at Otew, with the stipulation that they teach from the Bible.
All of the church members take part in the ministry. Ruben says, “We have no full-time pastor, but we have plenty of pastors in this church. Everybody is a pastor. We take turns, saying to each other, ʻYou have to study, so you can speak next week.ʼ Everyone is motivated to study. We listen so we can feed each other. Everyone is involved.”
Even the youth are encouraged to lead. Every month, Otew has a youth Sunday for their younger members to share by planning Sunday School, preaching, teaching, and leading music. Furthermore, the church stewards a scholarship fund, which has enabled two students to graduate from Bible college, and currently supports another student, Eufemia Buccahi, elsewhere in the province. Eufemia,  a slight, serious girl, dreams of becoming an evangelist after she finishes her studies. “My passion is to share the Gospel with people who donʼt know Him,” Eufemia says.

Eufemiaʼs passion, evangelism, is a high value for the Otew church as a whole. The church stays strong in outreach because they feel the Word of God compels them to do so. Ruben acknowledges that there can be resistance to their efforts to reach their community, but that preparing for the challenge of evangelism boils down to one element: “Study,” Ruben emphasizes. “Study, study, study, study the Word of God.”
In addition to their Bible studies and outreach, the Otew parishioners have been involved in checking the Central Ifugao Bible translation. The Ifugao New Testament has been available for over thirty years, but the Old Testament in Central Ifugao has yet to be published. “The Old Testament in Ifugao will be a big help,” Ruben states.

“The Ifugao translation is very clear. It helps me to find the true meaning of the Scriptures. You can read the Ifugao Bible to people: they don't know Tagalog (a language of wider communication in the Philippines), they don't know English, they don't know Ilocano (a language of wider communication throughout the province). But they know Ifugao. We are very happy that now the Bible has been translated,” adds Rosa Bayninan, an Otew church member.
The believers look at the Ifugao Bible translation as a way of preserving the Ifugao language. “Someday in the future, the Bible may be the only book in Ifugao,” says Ruben, acknowledging that Ifugao, like many languages in the Philippines, is changing rapidly with the influence of other languages of wider communication.
“The Ifugao language will not be lost,” Pedro Bayanan, a patriarch in the community and former pagan priest, asserts firmly. He remembers that he was punished for using his own language when he was in school many years ago. At the time, lessons were conducted in English and Tagalog. Teachers taught the children to use those languages exclusively in school, often resorting to corporal discipline. Now, the Philippine Department of Education encourages mother- tongue literacy, so Ifugao children are being taught in Ifugao as well as in other languages.
“You canʼt reach our whole community if you donʼt use the Ifugao Bible,” Ruben affirms. “Often, the response to the English Bible translation is, ʻThatʼs the foreignerʼs Bible.ʼ But the Ifugao Bible is ours.”
"For the word of God is living and active, sharper than anytwo-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart."
Hebrews 4:12

The Time is Drawing Near

73% - Praise the Lord! Yikes that means that we are that much closer to moving in January. With that brings a whole lot of things to do and feelings that are getting exposed.

Last week we found out that our work permits have been approved. Now we are working on getting our visa's. We have sent everything to PNG and are waiting for them to process our visa's. After that is done, we have to mail our passports to Washington and wait until they return them to us before we can leave. PNG is not known for doing things quickly so we will see how that goes!

We are also working on getting Candace's professional designation so that she can practise dental hygiene while we are there.

Emotions: excited, nervous, joyful, sad to name a few. We are so excited to make the move and start our lives in PNG. We are nervous and a bit anxious because we do not know what all to expect, especially when we will be living in the village! Joyful that God has been so faithful in providing for us so far. Sad that we will be leaving our family and friends so soon.

We also have other things to get ready and to get rid of! We have been purchasing clothes and shoes for the girls for the next 3 years and other things that we will not be able to buy when we are in PNG. And some things that we can buy there but is more expensive than here. We are also slowly selling and giving away our stuff that we have accumulated here. That is more work than we expected!

Please continue to pray for us as we make this transition. Also if you would like to help us get to 100% of our financial need or would like to partner with us in prayer please email us. (jonjagt at gmail.com)

"For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own."

Partnership Development

God has really revealed himself to us in the last few months. When we first became members of Wycliffe Canada and were going over our proposed budget we were a little apprehensive about how we were going to get all of our funds. Yes, deep in the back of our minds we knew that this is what God has planned for our lives, but our evil human nature kept rearing its ugly head putting doubts in our minds.

Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.
Philippians 4:6

We now have 54% of our budget pledged by many people who have come alongside our ministry. Praise the Lord! We have been doing many small group presentations. We have been so encouraged by the people that God has placed in our lives to pray for our ministry and to give financially towards it as well.

God has also been so faithful in our family lives. Our two little girls have given us so much joy! God really uses them to grow us in humbleness and patience! We are so thankful for that.

Please continue to hold us up in your prayers. Some prayer requests:
  • that we will not lose sight of the plans God has for us while we are working on getting things in order
  • that we will reach our financial goal of 100% support for our ministry budget
  • our work permits will be successfully processed by the PNG government
  • God will give us peace as we prepare our minds and hearts to leave our family and friends

For I know the plans I have for you, declares the LORD, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.

Status of Bible Translation Task

This is a good visual presentation of the status of the world wide Bible translation project.

There is still a lot of work to be done.  :)

Pray.  Send.  Go.

The Bible in the Heart Language of the People

While doing our presentations we have had many questions about the importance of the Bible being in the heart language of every tribe in Papua New Guinea. One question that seems to come up most often is: "If the people can speak English why do they need the Bible in their own language?"

Here is an article that we found that addresses this question quite well.

Why Bother?

Is it worth while translating the Bible into the local language when people use the regional language to visit the neighbouring area and where English and the national language are used in school?
"In the Mayoyao area, definitely yes!" says Barbara Hodder, who worked on the New Testament.
People who can 'get by' in another language may not know it well enough to understand the Bible. One Mayoyao woman was surprised when she started reading John's Gospel in her language. "Before, I hadn't the patience to read in English for even one hour because I couldn't understand. But now that I can read the Mayoyao translation, two hours isn't enough! And I cry so much, I have to keep stopping to pray because it convicts me of all the things I haven't done."
Carmen Sabelo, who worked with Barbara, notices the change. "Whenever I read the Mayoyao Scriptures people respond much more positively. People who learned to read in English and the national language find it hard at first to read the Mayoyao and get meaning from it, so we started reading fluency classes. Now in every class people ask when the New Testament is coming!"
A church leader who used to teach in Ilocano, the regional language, noticed a difference when he switched to Mayoyao. "I realised people weren't listening because they didn't understand. Then my wife taught me Mayoyao and I started using it, but I only had an Ilocano Bible. So I prayed that someone would come and translate it into Mayoyao. God is good. He sent someone from the UK who has spent many years doing it. I can see the translation touches people's hearts. Now I am teaching a reading fluency class and I can see how happy people are to read the translation because they don't need a lot of explanation."
People's enthusiasm will soon be fulfilled. After 14 years' work the New Testament has reached the typesetting stage and an official launch is being planned. One pastor who attended reading sessions that were held to encourage feedback from the wider community said, "At first I didn't really like using the Mayoyao translation, especially since my dialect is different from the main one. But in our church services I found that people were much more attentive, so I am going to keep it up!"
That is the goal--not just another New Testament, but people using it and receiving spiritual life and strength from it.

New Translation for the Marik Language Group

We have some exciting news we would like to relay to you.

There has been a completed translation of the New Testament for the Marik language group in Papua New Guinea!  It has been 36 years since the translation project began but all of that time and sacrifice was worth it.

This is what our motivation is centered around.  The people of the Marik language group can now read for themselves in a language that speaks to their heart the Word of the living God!  Praise the Lord!

An Australian news website picked this story up.  Check it out at this link: http://www.abc.net.au/news/2012-08-14/an-new-bible-in-papua-new-guinea/4197324

"And when they arrived and gathered the church together, they declared all that God had done with them, and how he had opened a door of faith to the Gentiles."

Recent News

We have had an exciting last couple of weeks! On July 6th we were blessed with the birth of Macy Lyn. It has been so exciting having two girls in the house!  Macy was born at home with the help of a midwife. Everything went well and she is a healthy little girl.

We are also thankful to God for the opportunities of doing a few small presentations for the awareness of what we will be doing in Papua New Guinea. We have met with some of the small group Bible studies from our church. We really love the idea of presenting to small groups. It is a more comfortable setting and allows for lots of questions. If you would like to know more about what we will be doing, we can arrange a time to meet with you and a small group of your family and friends.

We have started getting some monthly pledges. We have just over 10% already. Praise God!

Things Are Happening!

Since we have become members of Wycliffe Canada we have started to set up meetings and presentations to make people aware of the work that Wycliffe is doing in Papua New Guinea. There are lots of steps we have to complete before we can go.

Here are a few things that we are working on:
  • passports
  • Candace's professional designation
  • partnership brochures (we should have them soon to hand out)
  • raising support
We will need 100% of our support before we can apply for our visas. This is a bit daunting for us but we have to just remember to rely on God's strength for all of this. If you would like to support us please contact us by email at: jonjagt at gmail.com

We are also expecting baby number 2 to arrive in the next couple of weeks!  Please pray for God's strength in this and all that we have to do in the next couple of months.

COPE (Cultural Orientation for Personal Effectiveness)

We just finished a Cultural Orientation Course that we were required to take before we can apply to become members of Wycliffe. It was a 2 week course from February 27th to March 9th that was held in Scarborough. Thank you for all your prayers as we took this course. God was really at work in our lives and in all those who were there with us.

We learned so much more than just cultural things. Everyday was a different topic led by a different facilitator. And everyday someone from our group told us their testimony of how they came to know Christ and how God has led them into missions. We spoke our testimonies kind of midway thru which was a new thing for both of us. We both knew that God was working in our lives but had never actually relived it with an audience. It was a beautiful experience for us. After we did our testimony a couple of people prayed for us.

A couple of topics that really interested us were: spiritual warfare, healthcare, cultural shock. There were so many other topics covered as well. Thankfully, we got to take home a binder of information that sums up all that we learned, otherwise we might forget some of it. There was just so much valuable information everyday to take in.

Another thing that we really valued was getting to know different people from different countries, churches and organizations. We had many opportunities to pray and study scripture together, which we thoroughly enjoyed! The Holy Spirit was truly at work unifying all of us and teaching us how to bring Christ to foreign lands!

Commit your work to the Lord, and your plans will be established.

Introduction

We have started our blog to share with you our journey in serving the Lord with our talents through Wycliffe Bible Translators.

Over the past 3 years, God has guided our path and confirmed along the way that he would have us work, using our current skill sets, with Wycliffe.  The path has been somewhat long and has included many dips and turns, but it has all been to prepare us for work in this capacity. One of the steps in this decision process was to visit the Ukarumpa "translation hub" in Papua New Guinea.  We took this two week trip along with our daughter Clara in April of 2011 in order to get a good feeling for what life would be like in PNG.  This trip proved to be further confirmation towards making the decision to join Wycliffe Canada.

One of the reasons we love the idea of a blog is so that we can effectively request prayer during this process.  Up till now, we have relied heavily on our God and will continue to do so during this membership process.  Our immediate plan is to attend a 2 week orientation course called COPE (Cultural Orientation for Personal Endurance & Enjoyment).  This course is a requirement for all prospective Wycliffe members and we are hoping it will serve to further prepare us for the coming years.  Please pray for this course to a be a significant blessing in our preparation and that God would continue to confirm His call on our lives.

Our goal is for Jon to work in the software development field in Ukarumpa; helping out all the different systems that are used there. Also for Candace to help out in the dental clinic working as a Hygienist.

Please bookmark this blog and check regularly.  We would love for you to partner with us in prayer over the coming months.  Also, feel free to contact either of us if you so desire.  (Jon - jonjagt at gmail.com and Candace - candys29 at hotmail.com)

Now to him who is able to establish you in accordance with my gospel, the message I proclaim about Jesus Christ, in keeping with the revelation of the mystery hidden for long ages past, but now revealed and made known through the prophetic writings by the command of the eternal God, so that all the Gentiles might come to the obedience that comes from faith— to the only wise God be glory forever through Jesus Christ! Amen.
Romans 16:25-27
